Small city that looks to me like an postsoviet American suburbs mixed with fisherman lodges and german bricks. For me, the architecture itself was not appealing at all, the only things I really appreciated were the Kuopio Museum (very cute), lake views and fantastic University. If you are a fan of extremely slow and chill places where you feel like time has stopped, I would definietly reccomend, for me it was just lacking a certain character.

whatever you want, go to kuopio in winter. the whole place is like Europe used to be "once upon a time" (well even more like what Geelong (Australia) used to be like in about the 1950s. None of the special "modern tensions" (so oft depicted in current scandi-tv series) is there in Kuolpio. and of course in winter in finland there are not a miooion tourists (which might be the case in summer for all I know).
you just gotta go to Kuopio

We just have stopped there for the overnight when traveling to the north of Finland, but we were lucky to come on the eve of Finlad Ice Marathon, so we took and advantage to skate on the lake at night with fire lights. Strongly recommended event.

The best location is Centrum of the city of Kuopio, next to the center. Nice and lively head next to the market. The inhabitants of the Kuopio city of Kuopio are happy, talkative, helpful and honest. This city still has good Christianity and a Protestant Bishop in power. Here it is also nice to move along the different streets to the lake shore. Even to swim or play tennis.
Near the centrum hotels there are restaurants, shops, an interesting fresh market and nice cafes. The center of Kuopio is a safe environment for vacationing, shopping, eating, drinking coffee and being and enjoying yourself. In addition, Kuopio has the best Police in Finland. The police arrive at the Centrum market place in emergency situations in about 5 minutes.
I have also lived in Kuopio for 20 years.

Bike and pedestrian friendly city, really wide cycling and walking paths, usually separated from busy roads. Also a cheap electric bike rental system - 10€/week. The marketplace is a must-visit, small but so nice and varied, and there's this really nice lady there selling baked goods and she speaks perfect English! The tower is also nice, and it's fun to go to the ski jump and see actual jumpers in action - also during the summer! Visit the harbour and walk around, and use the cheap bikes to go around the city to the islands and forests, there are so many nice connections. The city also has so many nice parks and green areas. What I don't like: there are many mosquitoes, so find a place that has mosquito nets on the windows and spray yourself if you go outside the city. It's also quite expensive, but that's Finland in general I guess, not just Kuopio. In general, really a place worth visiting!

Regional centre with some character - particularly in summer. Harbour area always attractive. Traditional restaurant Sampo never disppoints - the menu hasn't changed for at least thirty years (try the deep-fried 'muikku' - that's vendace to the rest of us).
Very comfortable and spacious room with fantastic kitchen equipment and tech accessories.
A word about breakfast: there were enough things in the room for a nice breakfast (coffee, tea, juice, milk, fruit, eggs, porridge and müssli + blueberry soup, but if you want bread, salami, cheese, etc. bring your own).
Located in a nice residental neighbourhood about 10 minutes from the centre of Kuopio by car.
Very good overall, with very helpful staff. The location is a short bus ride from the train station and bus station. Without luggage, it's a walkable distance to the city centre and some major attractions, especially the Orthodox Church Museum of Finland, and also other attractions.
Or you can walk (or cycle) in the opposite direction along numerous pleasant, forested roads and pathways.
Everything!
Welcoming environment - spacious, clean, and cozy, comprehensively furnished apartment in an excellent location with perfect view of a lovely lake in all seasons.
Wonderful host - always responds to questions promptly and in a very friendly manner.
Definitely one of the best places to stay in Kuopio!
Location was very convenient for the station and the town centre. The bed was very comfortable. The room was very clean and the shower was good with absolutely marvellous soap, shower and shampoo products. The breakfast was absolutely brilliant! Staff were delightful. I loved the Lapland theme of the hotel
It was a good experience to stay at this hotel. I got what I expected. Room rate was fine and breakfast was OK. My room had a very nice bathroom. Also all the facilities were super clean. Staff was friendly too!
Good small size apartment to stay in and visit Kuopio. Very nice balcony to look at the harbor and the lake.
Nice kitchen with everything you need to cook yourself, including the coffee maker.
Good attention, clean room, good facilities and excellent location, very good experience in general
Exellent location to have some relaxed holidays
We really recomment this hotel.
Hotel accommodation in the most central location. The breakfast is plentiful and the service is very friendly. Big room. The facilities are good and everything works.
Breakfest was great, great choice of food. I like also the way the hotel reduces waste of food. Beside this, the room was comfortable big enough, halls are wide.
It was very clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. In a good location with excellent views over Kuopio. Good and fast communication with owner too.
