FAQs about hotels in Heraklio Town

The Cradle of Minoan Civilisation

Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.

Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.

Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.

Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.

The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.

I liked the harbour area for strolling and eating with the market areas for shopping. Knossos was a wonderful experience as was the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Give yourself two to fours hours to really see Knossos, depending on the crowds and three to four hours to see everything in the museum.

Heraklion is a wonderful walking city, with excellent restaurants and family run tavernas, fantastic bakeries, delightful cafes and coffee shops, incredible museums, outstanding ancient historical sites very close by, great transportation, affordable and luxurious taxis, very friendly people, wonderful places to sit and watch the sunset and sunrise, amazing Venetian harbor, beautiful coast and beaches, very easy airport access only 15m from town and all around great spot for the beginning and ending of a trip to the magical island of Crete!

The town/city has many new buildings after WW2.

The town/city has many new buildings after WW2. There is an extensive shopping area with many restaurants and bars, the older buildings are either being replaced or renovated, but the outlying suburbs need development and some proper Town & Country planning application. The boundaries between domestic, retail, industry & commerce need greater definition. Great potential for tourism, with areas of domestic and tourist housing showing signs of its artistic residents "flare".

This is good for a weekend trip, but if you are staying longer hire a car and tour, landing here and returning via Chana. We took out the extra insurance via Booking.com, very wise because the vehicle was hit by a driver while parked, who drove off. Due to the state of the roads and the increased traffic this is common, there was another couple in the hire office that had also been hit while parked. Standards of driving in Greece are poor. Booking.com paid out within 24 hours of the claim. This was a return visit to Crete after 20 years. The nation is in steep decline with appalling infrastructure and an unhappy population. We will not return.

Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas. Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire. For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting. We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre. Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

The position is a perfect compromise for visiting the Cnosso palace ( 7 minutes by car) and Agia pelagia beach ( just 30 minutes for an amazing water in a close by town). The room is clean and traditional. The true gem of the hotel is the hospitality. Katerina ( the receptionist) has been an impeccable and outstanding host, she gave us a lot of useful and practice tips to plan our trip(where to go on the beach, where to buy essential stuff, where to eat tipical Creta food). We felt very welcome and spoiled. Highly recommended.

I went to Santorini Island from the hotel offered tours, it was amazing, the most beautiful trip, saw the Blue churches, dunkies, white traditional houses, the environment in the island, etc. The hotel administration were so sweet, since we missed breakfast due the trip, they provided us with a little breakfast package. The rooms were cleaned everyday, as well as new towels were provided! The view from the room was just magical - one side city centre, one - the sea. Location was better than expected - near the old town.

Sartori Concept Hotel is Crete’s gem! Located in the city center of Heraklion, walking distance from the archeological museum and next to cafes restaurants and bars. The cool part is the indoor yard which gives a relaxing vibe, ideal for enjoying a cup of coffee. Decorated with ceramic pots with beautiful flowers. A neat litte hotel right in the heart of Heraklion. The tidy modern rooms are ideal for brief stopovers on the way to other destinations on Crete as well as for longer stays for those who wish to explore the Heraklion itself. It's worth it! The city has lots to offer. The staff are super friendly and very helpful indeed. I've stayed at the Mirabello a few times now and can definitely recommend it.

Nice, clean hotel and great value for money! The staff were so friendly and the location was great near the waterfront, a parking builiding nearby that costs 8 euro for 24 hours and it is a short stroll to the old centre. It had a mini fridge, comfy beds, nice bathroom with plenty of towels. It exceeded my expectations for a basic 4-bed room. I would definitely recommend!

I liked the fact that the hotel is so close to the airport; we prefer to take the afternoon flight from the UK which arrives at 22:45 and we then need to stay somewhere close before going the next day to our house near Rethymno. The man on reception is always friendly and welcoming; the hotel is comfortable and clean and is a great way to start our trips to Crete.

Right near airport (virtually the end of the runway) so convenient for waiting for a flight. Staff nice and friendly. Booked taxi for us. Nice room with all the facilities.

The location of the hotel was close to the sea and also near the towd centre. The breakfast was good and the staff helpful
